2016 Life Goals: Starting 2016 Running

2016 Life Goals Get Moving More

My family (my boys and I with dad as the official photographer!) literally started the year off running by participating in the Atlanta Track Club’s 2016 Resolution Run. If you know me, I don’t really run. Over the years, I’ve said I was going to start and even worked up to running a mile using the Couch to 5K program. However in 2016, my 7 year old is going to turn me into a runner.

The real reason why I’m going to become a runner is because he’s a Kilometer Kids with the Atlanta Track Club. ATC sponsors a program, Kilometer Kids as one of their outreach efforts. He participates in their weekly sessions at school and has learned about pacing himself, good nutrition and lots of other healthy behaviors. The mission of Kilometer Kids is to promote a healthy and active lifestyle to area youth through a running-based program, empowering children with the knowledge they need to make smart lifestyle choices. I love that he is participating with Kilometer Kids because what he is learning, he’s empowering our whole family with.

Back to how I’m going to become a runner. Because we’re big on lifelong learning outside of school walls as well, I signed us bothup for the Thanksgiving Day 1 mile. He shocked me and completed the race much quicker than I would have thought he would! While he didn’t know it, he gave me an unspoken challenge to keep up with a 7 year old. I have signed myself up for the 2016 In-Training for the Atlanta Women’s 5K. Three times a week, Atlanta Track will hold training sessions for women just like myself who are going to get moving. The goal of the program is to provide a fun, motivating running environment that helps women start their journey towards health and fitness and develops a knowledgeable runner/walker.

While the 7 year old and I both have our own journeys to becoming runners, Atlanta Track Club is also so cool that they offer a 50M dash for the youngest runners and even my 3 year old is in on the running fun. Can you see what a good time he had running his race? He is probably the cutest runner because he’s been planning for the race for the longest. He keeps saying “Jason is going to be on my team and we’re going to WIN!” His friend Jason didn’t join us for this race but we have hope for the future and he did WIN his race.

This post is one of my 2016 Life Goals on having our family moving more, so I invite you to follow along in January as I share all my resolutions. My big race is March 26 and I hope to run it the whole way. What are your goals for 2016? Share them so we can support each other.

I got into running several years ago and I was proud to accomplish at least a half-marathon. But I got injured and it left a stigma. Now with your post I am encouraged to try again. Thanks for sharing!

I have added a race to my goals as well! My daughter wants to complete another triathlon together. We did this five years ago – but my body has changed a lot since then. But when our kids ask us, we say yes – don’t we? Good luck to you! I will be cheering you and me both on.

OMG what an inspiration!!!! Even to me, I am NOT a quick runner but this little dude has inspired me! I am doing a C25K running, to help me run further/faster. I have a goal to run an entire 4mile race that is in June.
