Four Steps to Going from Team Mom to Coach Mom

This spring, I’m trading in my #TeamMom headband for #CoachMom headband. Yep, I’m coaching the soccer team for the little one and I realized that I have given over all my Saturday mornings for the next 8 weeks. I’m a little overwhelmed by this development but when I signed up on a whim (I was asked when I signed them up), I figured “How hard can it be? They’re preschoolers. ” I realized that this is going to be a big difference so here are four ways I’m going to set us up for success.

First, I’m getting help and getting an awesome #TeamMom to support our team. As #TeamMom, I’m used to sending out the communications, managing the snack rosters and taking pictures on the field. I will not be able to do that this year for either boy. I will take pictures of the big one when he’s not playing though. Since I received my roster, I’m going to reach out for a team mom on the first contact.

Secondly, I’m coming with a strategy. I’m in here as a coach now and ready to make sure we’re prepared! I’ll be using the resources from the coaches site to make sure I’m ready for each game with the strengths of my players in mind (some may be more aggressive than others – those are our front line)!

Week Two Lineup


Next, I’m planning ahead with our attire, our uniforms and even our snacks. Since this year, we have two playing I’m not going to have the extra Saturday morning time to look for cleats or shin guards. All that it going into the bag the night before. For our snacks (and even breakfast), I’m planning on packing in the Mini Babybel cheese.

Mini Babybel and fruit is one of my go-to breakfast snacks most mornings because they’re convenient with the little red wax wrapped around them. They also have at 4 grams of protein and 15% of my calcium needs for less than 70 calories. A perfect win for me! The bonus is that while I bring one for me, if my oldest is still hungry after he finishes his, my snack is something he likes just as much and will gladly eat. We do have our own personal favorite flavors though. He’s more of a Mozazrella and I’m a Gouda.

Finally, I’m having fun with this. They’re 3 and 4 years old. I’m sure there’s going to be lots of fun with friends, tons of bunching up, cheering when it goes into the other team’s goal even, plenty of missed kicks and even a few tears. But that’s all part of the game and growing in life. At the end of the season, I hope my son and all the other members of our league built their skills and had a great time with soccer. I’m not sure what lessons I’ll learn. I’ll come back and let you know in May.
