Dolce Vita – The Sweet Life at Loews Portofino Bay Despicable Me Suite

This part of my series on our experiences at the Family Forward Conference. For my overall impressions, visit here.

During our visit, we stayed at the Loews Portofino Bay resort. It is a beautiful Italian-village themed hotel. Every detail on the property is really reflects a stay in the Italian village Portofino from the cars parked outside to the greetings used by the staff to the music in the common areas. I really felt like we were traveling without a passport. Can you see this view?

Since it is part of the Universal Orlando Resort, your check-in helps get you in the spirit of visiting the parks with branded room keys. However, if you choose not visit the parks, you’d be perfectly happy staying at the hotel and enjoying all the onsite restaurants, the swimming pools, the spa and everything else you would expect from a luxury resort like Loews. My husband and I agreed that would love to stay here and just experience the hotel for a getaway without visiting the parks even. However, I would highly recommend staying on property if you’re planning to visit Universal. By staying on property, you receive an extra hour of time in the park and free Express passes which allow you to skip to the front of most of the ride lines. They were more than worth any extra costs from staying at a cheaper location.

We were fortunate to win an upgrade to one of five Despicable Me Kid Suites as part of the Family Forward conference! My family loved this suite (my two year old even said “I want the Minion bed” our first night home). It made quite the impression on us all. The first room is an adult room with a standard king size bed and glass doors that opened onto a patio overlooking the square. Then you go through a clearly marked door to the kid’s room. The room is really a kids dream. It’s totally Minion themed from the floor (inlaid design in the carpet) to ceiling (check out the border). The full-sized beds are designed as missiles just like Margo, Agnes & Edna’s in Despicable Me. There is an industrial styled storage cabinet/dresser, nightstand and desk.  Loews has really spared no details as even the lighting and paint on the walls really fits with the theme.  I will say from looking at pictures another winner’s room, that each room is a little different. For instance her room had a table and ours didn’t.

My boys were totally surprised with our suite!

As a mom, I loved the room for a few reasons. First, it’s cool and my boys liked it. Secondly, it gave my family more space but didn’t compromise their safety. Because there’s only one entrance to the kid’s room through the adult room, I didn’t have to sleep lightly listening to make sure they didn’t wander to the hotel door or that someone else could possibly get in (I know they had security locks at the top but still!) I would even think this room would be awesome for families with teens because there’s no sneaking out, access to a minibar or telephone to make long distance charges.

Since I can show you much better than I can tell you, here’s a video of the suite! I hope you get to visit for yourself. I’m sure it’ll make your family Happy.

Loved reading about your minion suite. It is interesting to see the differences in your room compared to ours. Same fun details for the most part, but especially your “parent” room looked different than ours. Oh Man! I want to go back NOW! 🙂

When I was at Universal Studios last year I seen this resort. I usually don’t stay on the properties of amusement parks to save money, but looks like it’s well worth the money. Great review Kendra!

I think this would be a lot of fun to stay at, even with adult kids! They can have their own room and I can have mine. I cannot get over how much Universal Orlando Resorts Italian Village looks so much like a beautiful Italian destination. I do believe it is time to start planning next year’s vacation now, and put this on the top of the list. Thanks for sharing your great experience.

It was so amazing. I can’t tell you how fun it was. And the extra space did really make for a relaxing time. We were able to really rest without being cramped.

The minions are so cute, it looks like you had a fantastic time. I like that the child’s room only has access through the parent’s room. That would make any parent feel more safe.

I would love a stay in a Despicable Me room! How fun. The Italian aura of the hotel is just amazing too – takes me back to my visit to Italy back in ’03.

Yes, please visit here! So worth it with the extra hour. It really allows you to get the most from the parks and the express pass was awesome! You can buy the express pass but it was cool not having to.

    Hi Kendra,

Ha! When your bunch becomes teenagers they aren’t going to be able to pull anything over on you! You’re already about six years ahead of them in thinking of it all during your stay in the Despicable Me Suite at Universal!

My kids, yes the teens too, would be in LOVE with your room! All two room hotels make them happy and provide them with a little more freedom and fun than a standard suite.

Thank you for sharing your amazing vacation with us. I look forward to reading more from you Family Forward Conference series.

    Have a great weekend,

Thanks Victoria. I swear I loved this suite because it was so family friendly for all ages. I’m sure we’ll be visiting again purposely when they are teenagers.

Wow, I love upgrades. You all are super lucky. I heard the Minion Suites were awesome. I love your photos. Don’t you just want to go back. I really didn’t want to leave the Portofino. I loved our view and our room.

That room is AWESOME! My kids would love that. With all my youngins though it just isn’t possible to fit into hotel rooms. Maybe during a vacation with just a few of the kids I’ll be able to experience this.

How cute is this Despicable Me Suite! That has to be so fun for kids…I can’t wait to have kids and put them in fun hotels like this!

I have a few questions about the Despicable Me Kids Suites at Portofino Resorts.
    1. Do they have Internet? If not, how much and does it work?
    2. Does each room have a refrigerator? If not, how much and how big is it?
    3. Where are the suites on the property? Close to pool??
    4. Places to eat or get groceries delivered??

    Thanks, Jenn

    • KendraKendra says

      Hi Jenn,

The hotel has free wireless internet for all guests over the whole property. We did not have a refrigerator. I’m not sure if they’re available or the cost. The suites are all over the property. Ours was fairly close to a pool but I’m not sure where the other 6 are located. The hotel would better be able to tell you. There are 6 different restaurants on the property plus room service options. Because there are no refrigerators in the rooms, I wouldn’t have groceries delivered.

Hope this answered all your questions. The hotel website really can be a great resource. They were so accommodating.
