Tennis Anyone – The Follow-Up

The last few weeks I’ve been participating in the Atlanta Tennis Association’s Tennis Apprentice program. It has been a great experience so far. The program provided me with a racquet, lessons, USTA member and winter league registration for only $49.
It’s helping build my goal of being more active and fit. There are about 20 people in the class and most of us are true beginners, so there are lots of missed serves, air balls and baseball style hits. This releases a lot of the pressure you might feel from entering a normal class. Most of us didn’t even own racquets before the first day! The class started with a series of drills the full class and coaching from our two coaches (teachers), Now at week 4, we’ve moved towards playing full games with complete scoring. We usually still start with a few drills like serving or backhand but the games take up most of the class. I like the beginning of class drills still because they allow for more review and correction by the coaches so I really can see an improvement in my game.
In addition to the class, the fee included registration in USTA winter league with other class sites around the city. I’m very excited to continue my participation this fall and winter. I’ve even learned how to self-rate to get placed into games with people of equal skill levels.

The best part is that my kindergartner has seen me play and now is in his own class. This means that it won’t be a one time class for me but rather a family activity we can all enjoy and grow with over the years.

We are truly making it a family affair because my husband will be taking the same class in a second session of Tennis Apprentice. The second session begins the week of October 28 will run much like this one. If you’re interested in registering or would like to at least learn more, visit the Atlanta USTA site.  I’m sure you’ll have a great time and maybe we can play a game!

Way to go taking up tennis AND including your son! It is excellent exercise, lots of calorie burning and cardio. I am not a good tennis player 🙁 but rooting for you from the sidelines!
